Mission:
Empowering individuals & community to improve their physical (body), mental (mind) and inner (spirit) health and wellness through education and advocacy, on such topics as: essentials of vibrant life, holistic therapies, preventative health care/self care, nutrition, the arts, music, relaxation and inner work.
Goals:
· Create community discussion supporting healthy lifestyles with preventative care as the primary focus.
· Create support groups to talk about things that matter, inner work and any aspects of health and wellness.
· Educate community regarding stress reduction as key to health.
· Create a healthy society which fosters reduced medication dependency.
· Create self-sufficiency by growing or gathering own herbs & native beneficial plants.
· Create supportive, intentional communities that care for one another.
· Create caring neighborhood groups to promote COMMUNITY - know your neighbor, give a helping hand, compassion, pot-lucks with healthy foods from your own garden (consult with permaculture group), music, exercise, relaxation.
· Change health-care system to single-payer.
Projects:
· Put more healthy foods at fast food stores, filling stations, hotels;
· Create organic alternatives to processed foods;
· Compile booklist to suggest to local booksellers of books that have been legitimately researched and valuable and put then on Transition Humboldt website, as well;
· Work with local library and make a section available to community and get the word out with press releases to media: includeTransition Humboldt books but also a section for health and wellness w/dvd and books to donate to the library that will stay in the library..and not be sold at the book sales.
· Compile resource list of local sources of organic food, including restaurants, and list of participating businesses with organic drinks, foods, juices, etc;
· Coordinate w/ CAFF and post where to get farm shares;
· Compile list of local alternative health practitioners and list of products/services available from each;
· Have monthly “Evening with the…” Invite local herbalists for presentation, organic farmers, health practitioners to teach about self care, Master Food Preservers;
· Compile list of herbs, spices, etc. that can raise in pots or window boxes, decks and gardens and benefits of each, plus local sources;
· Set up demonstration projects/training sessions to demonstrate ways to make and use teas, tinctures, etc. as well as ways to dry/preserve/can/store foods, herbs and spices and work with local herb stores;
· Educate about native plants and resources;
· Educate about the native diet and resources;
· Prepare posters with wellness info – food as medicine, thoughts for wellness, etc;
· Sponsor movie night with health and wellness focus to screen: Beautiful truth, Happy, I am, You can heal your life, The Shift, The Fluoride Deception, Homegrown Revolution, Life or Something Like it, etc.
· Request movies @ local theaters through Gathr;
· Compile references to video resources that demonstrate how and why exercise, healthy eating and working on your self promote healthy living;
· Liaison with single payer group that meet in Eureka @ Jefferson School; (Find out where group meets in Arcata)
· Outreach to Wellness community;
· Outreach @ Senior Center;
· Outreach @ UIHS – United Indian Health Services;
· Increase 1st responders in community;
· Get fire fighters/paramedics to do presentation/linkages – what do you do before they arrive?
· No soda in schools - Work with schools to stop serving soda, processed foods and switch to healthy drinks and food – we could work with CAFF, co-op, Locally Delicious group and their new book about lunch boxes;
· Work with schools on diet, drinks, lifestyle, relaxation;
· Flash Relaxation, Flash Walks, Flash Exercises;
· Carrot mob event - $$ raised that day to be spent by business for wellness for employees;
· Tabling @ Farmer's Market in Arcata 1x month or more;
